Can I Use Squarespace for Client Galleries?
Yes, if the client only needs to look. A Squarespace page can hold a gallery behind a password on every plan. What Squarespace's gallery help articles do not describe is a way for the client to pick, or a download of the whole set.
Updated September 2026
The fair answer is yes, and it is worth saying first. Squarespace lets you put a password on a page, its help centre says that option is available on all plans, and a gallery section or gallery block on that page will show your photos to anyone who types the password. No client account is needed. For a studio that already runs its website on Squarespace, that costs nothing extra.
The harder question is what happens after the client opens the page. A client gallery usually has three more jobs than showing photos. The client marks the frames they want. You learn whether they opened the link at all. The client takes the whole set home in one action. This page walks through what Squarespace publishes about each of those, using only its own help centre and pricing page, fetched on 24 September 2026.
It also says plainly when you should keep your galleries on Squarespace. For a lot of studios, that is the right call.
What a Squarespace page password actually gives you
A page password on Squarespace is one shared code for one page. Squarespace states it directly: "It's not possible to create unique passwords for different people." Every client who gets that page gets the same code.
| Behaviour | What Squarespace states |
|---|---|
| Passwords per page | One shared password, no per-person passwords |
| What can be protected | Individual pages and collection pages; collection items cannot carry their own password |
| Client account | None; the visitor types the password at a lock screen |
| Password length | 30 characters at most |
| How long access lasts | The session lasts 4 hours, then the visitor enters the password again |
| Search engines | A protected page is not accessible to them; a page indexed earlier may stay in results for a while |
| Plans | Available on all plans |
Two practical consequences follow. First, each client needs their own page if you do not want one family to see another family's photos, because the password belongs to the page. Second, the four-hour session means a client who opens the gallery at lunch and comes back after dinner types the code again.
One trap to avoid. Squarespace also offers "Not Linked" pages, which sit outside your navigation. Its access-control article is clear that search engines and visitors can still reach such a page. Leaving a gallery unlinked is not the same as making it private. Use the password.
What the gallery itself holds
Squarespace offers gallery sections and gallery blocks, plus gallery pages on the older version 7.0. Its help articles put the same ceiling on both current options.
| Item | Squarespace figure |
|---|---|
| Images per gallery section | Up to 250 |
| Images per gallery block | Up to 250 |
| Upload file size | 20 MB limit |
| Upload dimensions | 120 megapixel limit |
| Accepted formats | JPG, GIF, PNG or WEBP only |
| Recommended upload | 2,500 pixels wide, 500 KB or less |
The overview article also warns that an excessive number of images can make a site load slowly. For a portrait session of forty frames, none of this matters. For a wedding of six hundred, it means splitting the set across several sections and preparing every file to a web size before upload.
Three proofing jobs, and what Squarespace documents about each
We read Squarespace's help articles for gallery sections, gallery blocks and its image gallery overview. The narrow, accurate statement is this: none of those three articles describes a favourites, selection or bulk-download feature for visitors. That is a statement about the documentation we read, not a claim about every corner of the product.
Picks that come back as a list. A proofing round ends with the studio holding the client's choices in a form it can use. On clientgallery.io the client stars photos and loves the must-haves, then sends the selection. Once they have sent it, the gallery page in your studio shows an Export picks (.txt) button. It downloads a plain text file named after the gallery, with one filename per line, loved photos listed first and starred photos after. If you work in Lightroom Classic, the plugin pulls the picks back into your catalog instead, so there is no list to retype at all. If the client changes their mind, you reopen picking on the same gallery.
A signal that the client opened it. Each gallery tile in your clientgallery.io studio carries a small indicator showing whether the client has opened that gallery, with filters for all galleries, those seen by the client and those not opened yet. Your own visits are not counted. We did not look up whether Squarespace reports views of a password page, so we make no claim either way. This is only what the gallery product does.
The whole set in one click. A client on clientgallery.io downloads the entire gallery in one click, or any single image, with no account. You can switch downloads off for a gallery when you only want viewing. Squarespace's own download article points the other way: it says there is no way to completely prevent someone from copying images, advises against the right-click blocking some people add with custom code, and recommends watermarked images of 1,500 to 2,500 pixels under 500 KB, which it notes will not be suitable for printing.
Side by side
| Job | Squarespace page | clientgallery.io gallery |
|---|---|---|
| Show photos behind a password | Yes, one shared password per page | Yes, one password per gallery |
| Photos per gallery | Up to 250 per section or block | Up to 1,000 per gallery |
| Client marks favourites | Not described in the gallery articles | Stars and loves, then the client sends them |
| Picks back to the studio | Not described in the gallery articles | Export picks (.txt), or the Lightroom Classic plugin |
| Did the client open it | Not checked by us | Opened indicator on each gallery tile |
| Download the whole set | Not described in the gallery articles | One click, or switched off per gallery |
| Where it lives | Your own website and domain | Your studio's own subdomain, no platform branding |
The last row is the honest cost of moving. A gallery on clientgallery.io lives on your studio's subdomain of clientgallery.io, not on the domain your Squarespace site uses. The page carries your branding and none of ours, but the address is not your own domain. The own-domain guide covers exactly what that means.
What Squarespace costs, and what a member area adds
Squarespace's pricing page served Canadian dollar prices on the day we fetched it, including when we asked for US dollars. We could not verify US prices, so only the Canadian figures appear here.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing, per month | Memberships fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | CA$30 | CA$21 | 7% |
| Core | CA$45 | CA$32 | 5% |
| Plus | CA$59 | CA$46 | 1% |
| Advanced | CA$139 | CA$109 | 0% |
The same page states no caps on bandwidth or storage on any plan. It does not list page passwords or galleries as plan features; the password article is where Squarespace says passwords are on every plan.
If you want per-person access rather than one shared code, Squarespace's answer is Member Sites. Members sign up for a pricing plan, which can be free or paid, and a free member still gives an email address and creates a customer account. Squarespace says building a member site is free but selling memberships needs a website plan, and the fees in the table apply to membership sales. Page passwords cannot be used on member-site pages.
clientgallery.io is one plan at $10 a month or $100 a year, with unlimited galleries, photos and clients under fair use: 1,000 photos per gallery and 250 GB of proofs per paid account. The currencies differ, so we do not subtract one price from the other.
When to keep your galleries on Squarespace
Stay where you are if most of these describe your studio.
- Clients look at the photos and nothing more. There is no selection round, and the final files reach them some other way.
- Sets are small, well under the 250-image ceiling per section, and a handful of galleries a year is the whole workload.
- Having the gallery on your own domain, inside your own site navigation, matters more to you than picks or downloads.
- You already sell access through Member Sites and your clients are used to logging in.
A dedicated gallery earns its place when the proofing round is real work: the client has to choose, you need the choices back as filenames or in your catalog, you want to know who has not opened their link yet, and the client expects to take everything home in one click. The own-website workload comparison puts hours against those jobs, and do I need a client gallery platform covers the threshold in general.

Frequently asked
Can I use Squarespace for client galleries?
Yes, for viewing. Squarespace lets you put a password on a page, says the option is on all plans, and a gallery section or block on that page shows your photos to anyone with the code. Its help articles for gallery sections, gallery blocks and the gallery overview describe no favourites, selection or bulk-download feature for visitors, so a proofing round needs another tool.
Can each client have their own password on Squarespace?
Not on one page. Squarespace states that it is not possible to create unique passwords for different people. The password belongs to the page, so separate clients need separate pages, each with its own code. For per-person accounts, Squarespace points to Member Sites, where members sign up and create a customer account.
Is an unlinked Squarespace page private?
No. Squarespace's access-control article says search engines and visitors can still reach a Not Linked page. Keeping a gallery out of the navigation hides it from casual browsing only. Use a page password if the photos should be gated.
How many photos can a Squarespace gallery hold?
Squarespace's help articles give up to 250 images per gallery section and up to 250 per gallery block. Uploads are limited to 20 MB and 120 megapixels, in JPG, GIF, PNG or WEBP, and Squarespace recommends 2,500 pixels wide and 500 KB or less. A clientgallery.io gallery holds up to 1,000 photos.
How do I get a client's picks back from a clientgallery.io gallery?
After the client sends their selection, the gallery page in your studio shows an Export picks (.txt) button. It downloads a text file named after the gallery with one filename per line, loved photos first and starred photos after. Lightroom Classic users can pull the picks back into the catalog with the plugin instead.
Can my clientgallery.io galleries live on my Squarespace domain?
No. Galleries live on your studio's own subdomain of clientgallery.io, with your branding and no platform branding on the page. If the gallery must sit on your own domain inside your own site, keep it on Squarespace.
